From Trilobites to Star Charts: Decorating with Scientific Illustration

Before photography, science drew. Every trilobite, diatom and comet that entered the record did so through a draughtsman's hand: stippled, hatched, measured, and printed as lithograph plates in monographs that few people ever saw. Those plates have since escaped the library. Framed on a modern wall, a fossil study or a solar diagram does something decorative art rarely manages: it gives a room a subject to think about.

Why scientific plates suit modern walls

Scientific illustration was drawn under a constraint that doubles as a style guide: clarity above all. No background, no atmosphere, no artistic licence; just the specimen, isolated on the page, every structure legible. That austerity is precisely what makes the genre feel contemporary. A 19th-century-style trilobite plate has more in common visually with modern minimalist graphics than with the romantic landscapes of its own era.

It is also art with a conversation built in. Guests do not ask about an abstract print; they will ask what an ammonite with a hook-shaped shell is, and why a trilobite has quite so many legs.

Four families of subject

Fossils. Trilobites, ammonites and skeletal studies carry deep time into a room. They suit studies, offices and libraries, anywhere reading happens, and they flatter dark walls: ink plates on warm paper glow against green, navy or umber. Browse the Fossil series.

The microscopic. Diatoms, radiolarians and pollen grains are nature's geometry at its most extravagant: latticed spheres, spined boxes, perfect radial symmetry. Because the subjects are unfamiliar, they read first as abstract pattern and only reveal themselves as biology up close. Ideal for minimalist rooms that want intrigue without clutter. The earth itself. Geological cross-sections and topographic studies (tilted strata under level beds, contour lines stacked into hillsides) bring the draughtsman's precision to landscape without a single tree. They pair naturally with materials like stone, concrete and raw wood. See the Strata series.

Hanging science well

Two approaches work. The cabinet approach embraces the museum feel: a tight grid of same-size plates in identical thin frames, four diatoms or three trilobites, labelled by nothing but their own captions. The specimen approach isolates one larger plate as the wall's single exhibit, which suits the more architectural subjects like cross-sections and solar charts. In both cases keep frames thin and mats generous; these drawings were made for the clean page, and the framing should preserve that.
