Geometric Design You Can Wear: The Axiom Series

Most graphic t-shirts shout. A band, a slogan, a joke that expires. Geometric design is the quiet alternative, and it has quietly become one of the most searched-for categories in graphic clothing. The appeal is easy to understand once you see it: a good geometric print is not a picture of anything, so it never dates the way pictures do. It is structure, worn as structure.

Our Axiom series takes this one step further than pattern. Every design in the series is a real construction from classical geometry or mathematics, drawn in a single ink tone the way figures were drawn in old textbooks. Nothing decorative was added. The beauty was already in the figure; we just printed it.

Why geometry works on cotton

A diagram behaves differently on a garment than an illustration does. Illustrations compete with the wearer. A diagram sits on the chest like a well-set piece of type: legible from across the street as shape, interesting up close as idea. Two-tone ink on organic ring-spun cotton also solves the wardrobe problem the way it solves the wall problem: near-black on vintage white or French navy pairs with everything, because it adds line rather than colour.

There is also the honest pleasure of wearing something you can explain. Every piece in the series has an answer to the question “what is that?”, and most of the answers are better than a slogan.

What the figures actually are

A few of the constructions in the series, with their stories.

The Apollonian gasket starts with three circles touching each other. Fill the gaps between them with the largest circles that fit, then fill the new gaps, and never stop. The construction is named for Apollonius of Perga, who studied tangent circles twenty-two centuries ago. What you wear is the first few generations of an infinite process.

The Sierpiński carpet takes a square, cuts it into nine, removes the centre, and repeats the move on the eight squares that remain. Ours is drawn to the fourth iteration. Continue forever and the carpet's area shrinks toward nothing while its outline grows without limit, which is a strange thing to carry around on a t-shirt and an excellent thing to explain at a party.

The Reuleaux triangle looks like a triangle that swallowed a circle. It is a shape of constant width: measure it across any direction and you get the same number, a property it shares with the circle and almost nothing else. Engineers love it because it can rotate inside a square while touching all four sides, which is how you drill a nearly square hole.

The Witch of Agnesi is a smooth bell-shaped curve studied by Maria Gaetana Agnesi, one of the first women to write a major mathematics textbook, in 1748. The sinister name is a translation accident: the Italian word for the curve, versiera, was misread as avversiera, she-devil. The curve, like its author, deserved better, and it draws beautifully.

The series continues in the same spirit: an icosahedron wireframe (Plato's twenty-sided solid), a golden spiral built from stacked rectangles, a Lissajous knot traced by three overlapping oscillations, and a hexagonal close packing, the densest way to stack spheres and the reason honeycomb looks the way it does.

How to wear a diagram

Let the print be the only graphic element. Geometric tees work hardest in otherwise plain outfits: dark trousers, plain overshirt, nothing else patterned. The vintage white shirts read light and archival, closest to the paper the figures were first drawn on. The French navy pieces flip the contrast the way a blackboard does, and hold up better under a jacket.
