The single letter is the oldest personalisation there is. Long before printed names and custom everything, people embroidered initials into linens, pressed them into wax, and carved them over doorways. One letter was enough to say: this is mine, this is me. Our Alphabet collection brings that tradition to cotton, with a twist in the drawing.
Not a font
These letters are not typeset. Each one is painted as a sumi-e brush gesture, the East Asian ink tradition where a stroke is committed once and never retouched (we wrote about it in our sumi-e piece). The A is two confident strokes and a flick. The S is one loaded drag of the brush. Dry-brush edges and ink splatter stay in the print, because they are the print. The result reads less like a monogram from a catalogue and more like a letter someone painted for you, which, in a sense, it is.
All twenty-six letters exist, each on three garments: an organic cotton tee, a heavyweight hoodie in French navy, and an everyday tote.
Your own initial
The simplest case needs no styling advice. One letter on the chest, and it happens to be yours. It works precisely because it underexplains: a B is not a name, a birthday or a biography, just a quiet claim. People who would never wear their name on a shirt wear their initial happily. The same goes for the initial of someone you carry around in your head; nobody else needs to know which it is.
The gift that always fits the person
Gifting clothing is risky because taste is personal. Gifting an initial sidesteps the whole problem: you are not guessing their style, you are naming them. A letter tote for a colleague who is leaving, a hoodie with a new baby's initial for a tired parent (the parent wears it, the baby grows into the story), a tee for a friend's milestone birthday. As with all our gifts, the trick is that the meaning is chosen and the taste is left alone.
Letters in groups: families, teams, occasions
This is where the collection gets playful. Letters combine, and people holding letters combine even better.
Family photos. Four people can spell a surname, a place, or the family's running joke. Children take letter-holding duties extremely seriously, and the photo outlives the shirts.
Teams and clubs. A quiz team, a rowing crew, a choir section, a group at a fun run: five tees spelling the team's name beat any printed banner, and everyone keeps a shirt they will actually wear afterwards. The letters look intentional together because every stroke comes from the same brush and the same ink.
Occasions. Hen and stag weekends, milestone birthdays, reunions, graduation photos. Spell the guest of honour's name, then let the group rearrange itself into increasingly poor anagrams as the evening progresses. The morning-after photos are the real product.
Ordering for a group without the chaos
A few practical notes from the production side. Everything is printed to order, which for group orders means two things. First, there is no minimum and no setup cost: five different letters cost the same as five of one. Second, allow time: production takes a few business days and delivery adds a few more, so order two to three weeks before the event, not the Tuesday before. Collect everyone's sizes early and remember the sizing note that applies across our whole range: cuts run generous, so most people should order one size down. Keep the whole group in one colourway (all vintage white tees, or all navy hoodies) and the lineup will read as a set in photos. Free shipping kicks in at 50 euros, which a group order clears easily.
